Media Relations Executive (sport)

Press Box PR, a fast-growing PR agency, is hiring a Media Relations Executive to work in its sports and news media relations team.

Reporting to the sports leadership team, you’ll be largely pitching content to journalists and editors at a range of UK and international publications that cover trending sports and news topics.

You will have an extensive and enviable book of contacts made up of journalists and editors that you will be pitching content to, as well as liaising with them to generate feedback to improve Press Box PR’s media relations.

You will have your finger on the pulse of what kind of content UK and international publications will want to receive and the topics that they cover, which requires a keen interest in current affairs in news and sport.

From a media-first perspective, you will have creative input on the content that Press Box PR produces in: football, F1, cricket, boxing, UFC, golf, politics, trending tech news, celebrities and lifestyle trends, amongst other subjects.

You will have a keen eye for detail and the ability to produce engaging and accurate pitches on a proactive and reactive basis.

Due to the nature of the sporting calendar, this role requires frequent evening and weekend work.

You are:

‍Either…

A PR professional with experience of generating earned media coverage as a result of a good book of contacts that have been managed and developed over a period of time

‍…Or 

A journalist with experience working in newsrooms and is on firstname terms with peers and editors

‍Either way, the following are essential:

  • An extensive book of journalist and editor contacts at major mainstream news publications and outlets
  • A thorough understanding of the news and sport topics that publications write about and how the biggest events are covered
  • An ability to think on your feet and quickly react to breaking news stories to pitch engaging content to target publications
  • An understanding of the relationship between PR and journalism and how they compliment each other
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • An ability to manage your own time and competing priorities

‍Added bonuses may include:

  • An understanding of SEO and link-building
  • Experience working in PR
  • Experience working on a national or regional sports desk
  • Qualifications relevant to journalism or PR (i.e., NCTJ qualifications)

  • Salary; c. £23,000 to £26,000, depending on experience

Press Box PR operates a hybrid model, with three weekly office days and two WFH days. The role will also involve occasional travel within the UK and beyond to meet clients and journalists.
